The Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (SSSA) is an autonomous, special-statute university that operates in the field of applied sciences (http://www.sssup.it). The SSSA’s aim is to: promote the development of culture, scientific and technological research, and innovation; offer and oversee quality undergraduate, graduate and continuing education; assure continuous interaction between research and educational activities for high quality university studies. The Biorobotics Institute works in the research fields of Biorobotics and Biomechatronics, and in particular sectors of Rehabilitation Robotics, Assistive Robotics, Bio-inspired Robotics, Bionics, Humanoid Robotics, Human Machine Interfaces, and Gerontechnology (http://www.arts.sssup.it). Furthermore gerontechnology is also the main investigation area of EZ-Lab, a Research Centre of SSSA, dedicated to interdisciplinary research aiming at developing innovative technologies, services and systems for and easy, safe and healthy seniority. The research teams of the BioRobotics Institute have a strong experimental focus, and their research fields include design, fabrication and experimental assessment of robotic, mechatronic and AAL systems for personal autonomy and quality of life. Activities of these research areas mainly aim at developing innovative assistive devices, systems and methodologies for improving the autonomy of people with disability. Research is carried on following a Human Centred Design methodology, that benefits by a rich network of partnership with local and international clinical partners and other institutions, and by the availability – among other facilities - of the DomoCasa (a domotic environment developed as a laboratory for the assessment of human performance and for testing and validation of devices, systems and services for enhanced autonomy in domestic settings).
